Can you Learn Wing Chun at home?
Can you Learn Wing Chun online? Is Wing Chun easy to learn on your own at home? Yes and No. This comes down to a couple factors. There are advantages and disadvantages of learning online compared to in-person learning. My opinion is a combination of both work well the longer I practice Wing Chun. The obvious advantage of learning in person is live contact and live feedback. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to learn to spar effectively alone at home. This would include Chi Sau as well. Though, for many people in-person learning may not be possible for various factors one of which could be there is no Wing Chun School in your area. The advantage of online learning is getting into the details and philosophy of Wing Chun and learning the forms, which for was one of the most tedious and difficult parts of going to in person classes, brute force memorization. A combination of both can help you learn the forms and names of moves that you have to memorize easier and faster with the ability to ask questions and get down to the details on your own time. Or, you can learn in person first and add online later to fill in the details, which is what I did eventually with the Masters of Wing Chun not in my area. The reverse is true as well, where you learn a complete system online and one day you can fill in any gaps and work on real life application when you find a person to train with, get access to a local Wing Chun School, or can take time off to travel to a Wing Chun school to train for a period of time.
Wing Chun Courses
For the best online Wing Chun training, first you have to decide what lineage do you want to learn? For me, I am of the opinion that it would make intuitive sense Ip Ching and Ip Chun, the sons of Ip Man, would likely have the most accurate forms to what Ip Man taught. Many claim Ip Man lineage, but is their butterfly sword form the same as how Ip Man taught it or match the butterfly sword form of other Sifus that teach “Ip Man” Wing Chun? A lot of Sifus have modified the system, some a lot more than others. There are less than a handful of Sifus globally that learned directly form Ip Ching and Ip Chun that offer online programs and stay accurate to the system. Another issue I found is even learning from students of Masters, the information changes as they interpret moves differently, fill in gaps of missing information from their training and modify it to their personal taste.
I have spent over 10 years learning from 2 Masters of the Ip Ching, Ip Chun lineage in person and multiple masters of that lineage online at rates of $100/hour in attempt to compile the most accurate representation of Ip Man Wing Chun in my opinion.
